Review: Dating, Dining and Desperation

dear readers,

I read Lock, Stock and Over a Barrel last month (http://mynoveladdiction.blogspot.ca/2014/02/review-lock-stock-and-over-barrel.html)and just finished the follow-up book...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

DATING, DINING AND DESPERATION
(Book 2: Dear Daphne)
written by Melody Carlson
genre: contemporary fiction, christian fiction, romance

3 STARS

Daphne is still looking for a husband in order to fulfill her Aunt's condition of her inheritance. With less than a year left Daphne has to start dating ASAP.  She has help in her new Southern neighbour, Sabrina who has moved to town to get away from her ex-husband.  While Sabrina pushes Daphne at any and every man, her father and friend, Olivia still want her to date Ricardo, the owner of a local diner.  Daphne has been brooding over her aunt's lawyer, Jake who is on vacation with his ex-wife.

While her love life seems to be taking over everything she comes across a young girl who is being raised by her elder sickly grandmother.  Daphne inserts herself in Mabel and Vera's life and wonders if adopting a child would trump getting married.

Dating, Dining and Desperation is what I would classify as a middle book in that it carries on from the last book and sets up the next novel. Not a bad light contemporary romance but nothing special. I also do not like the heroine's love interest as it seems forced and I am just not feeling the chemistry.

Review: Shoreline Drive

dear readers,

I was iffy about the first novel in the Sanctuary Island series (http://mynoveladdiction.blogspot.ca/2014/02/review-sanctuary-island.html)but had already said yes to reviewing book 2 so I went ahead and read it...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

SHORELINE DRIVE
(Sanctuary Island: Book Two)
genre: contemporary romance

4 STARS

Merry and Ella have decided to stay in Sanctuary Island - Ella with her new love Grady and Merry with their mother and new baby, Alex.  While she loves getting to know her mother she is not sure living together is the best situation.  Ben, the vet, who helped deliver Alex decides to strike a deal with Merry...is he marries him he will provide for her and the baby and give Alex all he needs.  Ben tells Merry he cannot have kids and Alex is his and his family;s last chance at a heir.  Merry accepts his proposal but can the two keep from loving one another?

After being disappointed with the first novel I was not expecting anything.  I just wanted to read the book to complete my obligations...but WOW, a complete turn around.  While the story is cliched and predictable you wanted to see how the characters evolved.  With the second novel the author focused on fewer characters - Merry and Ben's story and Taylor's story.  This allows the reader to connect with the characters in my opinion.

Yes, I will be continuing the series...Heartbreak Cove (expected date 2015).

Fear for Me is for Me! (Review)

dear readers,

I have only read a few books by Cynthia Eden but she is fast becoming a favourite!

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

FEAR FOR ME
(Book Two)
written by Cynthia Eden
genre: romantic-suspense, thriller, romance

4 STARS

"She's the obsession two men share: one wants her love, the other wants her life.
A shared passion for justice first brought Baton Rouge district attorney Lauren Chandler and US marshal Anthony Ross together--when each played their part in bringing down the infamous Bayou Butcher. The sparks flying between the two made it clear they weren't just a legal dream team. Then desire had to make way for duty, and what they had was done. But it would never be over.

Five years later, it's none other than the Butcher who gets things started again, when his shocking jailbreak reunites the lawyer and the lawman...and reignites their love. But this time, the pair is in danger of being permanently parted--by a killer with revenge on his mind, and Lauren on the top of his list. As a new wave of terror sweeps through the streets and swamps of Baton Rouge, one man will pit his boundless passion against another's relentless hate, for the life of the woman who obsesses them both." (From Amazon)

An amazing follow-up to the first book in Eden's romantic-suspense series.  The books are loosely tied together but can be read as standalone. Lauren is strong female character that gives Anthony a run for his money,  Fabulous chemistry between the hero and heroine and great suspense.

I will be reviewing Eden's Mine series in the next few posts.

BDB Series: Book Two: REVIEW

dear readers,

I have already gone off track on my January reading plan and have added, Lover Eternal (Book 2) of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood to the list.  Book two follows Rhage's story and I totally gobbled this story up within a day...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

LOVER ETERNAL
(BDB: BOOK Two)
written by J.R. Ward
genre: paranormal romance

4 STARS

Rhage has looks that gets him all the women he needs to control his beast. He has been envious of those Vampires that have mates but it is not something he expects to find because of his curse.  That is until he meets Mary, a human.

Mary works at a law firm and volunteers the rest of her time at a helpline.  She was in remission for her cancer but she thinks it has returned. Mary has isolated herself but is friendly with neighbour, Bella.

One day a young man shows up at her door.  He is mute but Mary knows sign language.  She introduces him to Bella who thinks she knows what he is.  She contacts the Brotherhood who step in to help. When Rhage meets Mary something inside him changes.  As he tries to woo Mary as his own she in turn fears she does not have much time left.

I enjoyed the second book and loved Rhage and his beast.  I was not entirely sure I liked Mary all that much.  I found her to be a bit annoying but she does seem to get better as the book continues.  I also liked the introduction of new character, John Matthew.  He seems to have an intriguing story there and he is so loveable.  I must warn you dear readers that if you read this book you will need book 3 handy.  There is a cliffhanger ending...

This book was published in 2006.

New Carr Destination...Thunder Point

dear readers,

As you know from my previous blog posts, I HEART Virgin River - a contemporary romance series written by Robyn Carr.  As the VR series looks to be ended there is a new series, Thunder Point...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

THE WANDERER
(Thunder Point: Book One)
Written by Robyn Carr

4 STARS

"Nestled on the Oregon Coast is a small town of rocky b
eaches and rugged charm. Locals love the land's unspoiled beauty. Developers see it as a potential gold mine. When newcomer Hank Cooper learns he's been left an old friend's entire beachfront property, he finds himself with a community's destiny in his hands.  Cooper has never been a man to settle in one place, and Thunder Point was supposed to be just another quick stop. But Cooper finds himself getting involved with the town. And with Sarah Dupre, a woman as complicated as she is beautiful.  With the whole town watching for his next move, Cooper has to choose between his old life and a place full of new possibilities. A place that just might be home." (From Amazon)

I have read several of Robyn Carr's novels (stand alone and Virgin River series) and this book definitely held up to my expectations.  Like Virgin River it sucks you into the life of a small town.  This novel has characters from all ages, background and personalities.  If you are finish Virgin River this is the next book to read.  Or if you are fan of Jill Shalvis, Luanne Rice, Susan Wiggs or Kristan Higgins.

THE NEWCOMER
(Thunder Point: Book Two)
Written by Robyn Carr

4 STARS

The Newcomer picks up from where The Wanderer ends...Mac and Gina have finally admitted their feeling to one another and have become a couple.  Their teenage daughters are best friends and are both going through growing pains.  Mac's ex has returned to town making Gina insecure, his aunt Lou angry and scared and his daughter, Eve hurt. Gina's daughter, Ashley is dumped by her college freshman boyfriend and his new girlfriend sent a fake naked pic to all those in his cell phone. This causes Ashley to get very depressed and Gina does not know how to deal with it all.

I liked that this novel continues right after The Wanderer and like her other series, Virgin River the same characters are in this book.  The main romance in this book is Gina and Mac but as they are single parents their children are prominent in this novel.  The novel deals with cyber bullying and depression which we do not see a lot in adult books.  I think it was a great storyline that hopefully raises awareness.  Carr handled the situation quite well.  This novel might not be everyone's cup of tea as it has more of the teens and their problem in this book.  I enjoyed it and solidly recommend this novel and series.

The Marriage Mart: Reviews

dear readers,

Amanda Forester is a new author to me and the storyline for A Midsummer Bride sounded fun so I requested a copy. Then I found out it was book two so looked for A Wedding in Sringtime...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

THE MARRIAGE MART SERIES
genre: historical romance

A WEDDING IN SPRINGTIME
(Book One)

4 STARS

Genie Talbot's debut into London society is the talk of the ton and has made her a leper to any future social engagements all because she laughed in front of the Queen.  Being a country girl she wants to return home but is afraid she will let her family down. Her Aunt has decided the best course if action is to get her married off soon as possible before she becomes a scandal like her mother (eloped with another man).

William Grant in part was the reason Genie had laughed and now the rogue decides to help her get invitations to London's best soirées.  While he is smitten with the young beauty he has vowed to never marry and knows he must leave the young girl alone.  Yet the thought drives him mad and they seem to get closer together.

Lady Louisa, Genie's cousin, has nursed and watched her fiancé die and is now set yo marry his brother and heir, Lord Marchford. Marchford has returned home to set a date but finds his young bride to be distancing herself from him. The other woman in his life, his grandmother has set her heart to remaining in the estate and being the mistress.  Marchford decides to cut her allowance if she does not return to the country.

Penelope Rose has watched all her sisters wed and has resigned herself to spinsterhood at her youngest sister's wedding. She takes on a job as Lord Marchford's grandmother's companion.  The dowager has plan for them to make their own money so she can remain in London. The scheme is matchmaking and as plans are hatched and secrets kept this is soon headed for further disaster.

The gifts novel in the Marriage Mart series is bit only refreshing but quite adventuress. While matchmaking is the main game in the book there is espionage, affairs, secrets, elopements, orphans, mysterious characters, gambling and much humour.  There was a lot going on in this novel and many characters but I never felt bogged down or overwhelmed. It feels like a Jane Austen novel mixed with a little Charles Dickens and Alexandre Dumas for excitement. I loved the romance between Genie and Grant and their escapades with the orphan, Jem.  My only compliant with this novel was that the characters were not fleshed out more. As there were so many characters (and siblings) it takes away from getting to know them as individuals. While I really liked this read it is on the lighter side and more for a quick read. I will be continuing the series.

Amanda Forester holds a PhD in clinical psychology and a Masters degree in theology.  As a psychologist, she has worked as a clinical researcher and a university instructor (what they call you when they don’t want to give you tenure).  None of which has anything to do with writing romance novels.  After trying for many years to stop the internal storylines floating around her head, she finally gave up and wrote one down.  Now when she is caught daydreaming and talking to herself she can just say, “I’m plotting a scene for my next novel,” which sounds so much better than, “I’m hallucinating and responding to internal stimuli.”

Amanda lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family, three lazy house pets and one destructive puppy who is part yellow lab part tornado.
Amanda enjoys writing historical romance and splits her time between the rugged Highlands of medieval Scotland and the lively banter within the drawing rooms of Regency England.  She enjoys researching the history almost as much as the writing, and attempts to provide the reader with a glimpse of the historical reality, though usually without the fleas.

A MIDSUMMER BRIDE
(Book 2)

4 STARS

Madam X is back and is to help American Harriet find a titled suitor to fit into high English society. Traveling in the Americas a British ship looking for soldiers takes Harriet back to her estranged grandfather in England in hopes for a reward.

When Harriet's mother was a young girl her father, Lord Langley arranged her marriage to an older man she runs off with ship's captain. Lady Beatrice's father has not contacted or spoken to his daughter since she eloped. When his granddaughter has been dropped off at his door Lord Langley decides that this is his second chance. He looks to his ex-fiance and her companion to broker a match.

Harriet is loud, opinionated and loves chemistry as well as being very tall. Right away she is isolated by her peers and feels homesick. The only people that make an effort is Penelope and Lord Thornton. Penelope finds the American girl a bit odd but a genuine person. Lord Thornton cannot help but be interested in the tall chemist. When Harriet's dowry amount is announced the poor titled men start to hover by her but Lord Thornton starts to keep his distance.

His father married for money to save his estate and it was a disaster and now he watching his father gamble away the estate. No matter what he will not marry for money even if he has an interest in a lady.

As the two debate their feelings for one another Lord Marchford is again on the trail for a traitor. What was supposed to be a small house party has turned into carnival.

I love Antonia and Penelope with their matchmaking. Antonia and Lord Langley's banter is cute as well as Penelope and Marchford's shy flirting. Harriet and Thornton's romance is sweet but at times I found Thornton a bit annoying with his insistence on not marrying a woman with money. Again the novel has several story lines and characters but it is getting more seamless. And I am glad my hunches from the first book turned out true in this book. So ready for the next one.

When a Lad Meets a Lassie: Review

dear readers,

Taking a trip to the Highlands...

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

HIGHLANDER MOST WANTED
(Montgomery & Armstrong: Book One)
Written by Maya Banks
genre: historical romance

4 STARS

When Bowen Montgomery storms into the McHugh Keep he is not expecting to meet a woman like Genevieve.  A strong woman who stands up for the McHugh clan even though most do not seem to care for her. Genevieve views herself as a shame to family and her will to live broken.  When Bowen enters her life and stands up for her she comes to realize she is starting to feel again. But Genevieve has a secret that could cause Bowen to not only abandon her but hate her forever.  Yet, not telling him would eat at her conscience.  She resolves to tell the truth and return to her plans before Bowen to live in an Abbey; and Bowen once he knows her secret knows he will be alone again.  Will anything bring the two hope of a life together?

I am a big fan of Maya Banks' Highlander series yet this one was not to the scale of her previous novels. While I liked Genevieve and Bowen I was not always sure they were soul mates.  There wasn't as much excitement as her previous Montgomery and Armstrong novel.  Then again I would still recommend this book, and the series, to any historical romance lover.

I was hoping that in the next novel that it would be Brodie Armstrong and Taliesan's story AND IT IS!!!

After Scotland’s three strongest clans forge a formidable alliance, an uneasy king plots to consolidate power. Knowing that true strength lies in possessing land, fealty, and hearts, he orders sweet Taliesan McHugh to submit to a marriage that will give him control of the coveted McHugh keep. A tender beauty, Taliesan accepts her fate, certain that her lame leg has made her undesirable to any man—until she is swept into the powerful embrace of rugged, devilishly sensual Brodie Armstrong, a warrior who vows to shield her from brutality at any cost.
Fearless and bold, Brodie refuses his king’s command to stand down. Instead, he conspires to rescue the rare beauty whose bravery and innocence stir his blood as no woman ever has. As desperate power struggles reverberate throughout the Highlands, Brodie defies his king and devotes himself to the only mission that commands his loyalty, his blood, and his honor: winning Taliesan’s heart.

Whiskey Creek

dear readers,

I have left the world of regency for contemporary small town romances.  Maybe it's the giddiness of being in love or the need for simple present-day happily ever after but I am loving small town USA.  One of my favourites MUST-READ series is Brenda Novak's Whiskey Creek.  I have read Novak's romantic suspense so wasn't surprised when I instantly became hooked...

WHEN WE TOUCH
(Whiskey Creek: Book 0.5)
Written by Brenda Novak
genre: contemporary romance

4 STARS

This novella is the introduction to Brenda Novak's newest series, Whiskey Creek. Olivia has always imagined that when she planned Kyle's wedding she would be the bride, not her younger sister, Noelle.  During a break in their relationship, while Olivia built her business, Kyle slept with Noelle and had gotten her pregnant.  As Olivia returns home to plan and attend the wedding she finds herself in the path of bad boy, Brandon.  Brandon is Kyle's stepbrother and in no way friends.   As she becomes more attracted to Brandon she is starting to realize that maybe Kyle was never meant for her.

WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES
(Whiskey CreekL: Book 1)
Written by Brenda Novak
genre: contemporary romance

4 STARS

Gail is the owner of a PR company that handles bad boy actor, Simon O'Neal.  Simon is out of control and Gail finds herself getting sucked into a Jerry Maguire situation.  As Simon tries to take Gail down he learns that if he wants to gain custody of his son he will need Gail.  Gail down on her luck cannot believe she will need to help Simon to help herself.  As the two work together they realize the person the thought they knew was only a front and their life starts to get more complicated.

To be honest I was not sure I would if I would even like this book.  I am not really into the LA and acting scene so at first was a bit leery.  However, Novak's writing kept me turning the pages until I literally could not turn the pages fast enough.  I love Whiskey Creek and Gail and her friends.  I am ready for another book, PLEASE.

A great introductory story - short and sweet.  As I read this novella I was going through so many emotions like Olivia.  I wanted to slap sense into Kyle as everyone but him knew he was headed for trouble.  I liked how Novak wrote Noelle as it was so easy to make her into her a stereotype.  And, Brandon....was exactly what Olivia - and honestly any girl - needed.

WHEN SNOW FALLS
(Whiskey Creek: Book Two)
Written by Brenda Novak
genre: contemporary romance

4.5 STARS

Cheyenne loves her friends, especially Eve Harmon and her parents.  Whiskey Creek has been the first place she felt at home.  Her mother who is now dying of cancer has never treated her youngest daughter with any care.  She has looked out for herself and dragged her 2 girls around from one crappy place to another.  Cheyenne's friends have left town for a cruise leaving her alone with her mother and sister. Eve has recently been pursuing Joe, Cheyenne's longtime high school crush.  While Eve is away Joe has been pursuing Cheyenne.  Not only does she feel guilty but she has been recently felt attracted to bad boy mechanic, Dylan.  As she tries to stay away from him and his dangerous world she realizes that her mother has kept a secret which she could take with her in death.

So far this is my favourite Whiskey Creek novel...and it is only book 2!  Cheyenne has this innocence that made me want to see her happy and protected from everything bad.  I also felt for Presley and how she wanted to do right.  There was so much happening in this novel and I am still thinking about it.

WHEN SUMMER COMES
(Whiskey Creek: Book Three)
Written by Brenda Novak
genre: contemporary romance

4 STARS

Callie has moved into her grandparents' farm under the guise of making renovations so they can finally sell the property.  In truth Callie is hiding a secret from her family and friends about needing a liver transplant.  As she prepares to deal with this on her own, one night a stranger appears on her doorstep bleeding and hurt. The stranger, Levi stays on to help Callie with the renovations as he recuperates and Callie realizes she is not the only one with secrets.  As the two try and keep away from one another they find themselves more connected.

I am loving Novak's newest series, Whiskey Creek.  As each novel comes available I am just inhaling them in a day.  In the 3rd book we find out more about Callie and Kyle that was hinted in the last novel.  In the previous novels I was not that interested in Callie's backstory but wow I was hooked from the first page. I liked the chemistry between Levi and Callie as they try and keep away from one another as they both see themselves as damaged.  If you are looking for a small town contemporary romance with real heart this is the series for you!

COMING SOON...

Adelaide Davies, who's been living in Sacramento, returns to Whiskey Creek, the place she once called home. She's there to take care of her aging grandmother and to help with Gran's restaurant, Just Like Mom's. But Adelaide's not happy to be back. There are too many people here she'd rather avoid, people who were involved in that terrible June night fifteen years ago.
Ever since the graduation party that changed her life, she's wanted to go to the police and make sure the boys responsible — men now — are punished. But she can't, not without revealing an even darker secret. So it's better to pretend. . .
Noah Rackham, popular, attractive, successful, is shocked when Adelaide won't have anything to do with him. He has no idea that his very presence reminds her of something she'd rather forget. Neither does he know she's the reason his twin brother didn't survive that party at the old mine.

Review: Warrior Rift: Book 2

dear readers,

(I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review).

SECRET OF THE WOLF
(Warriors of the Rift: Book Two)
Written by Cynthia Garner
genre: urban fantasy, suspense

4 STARS

Human victims are being attacked by werewolves and being turned which is against the law. Council liaison, Tori teams up with human detective Dante to investigate the attack in their sector. Soon Tori finds herself keeping a secret not only from Dante but the council. If she tells the truth or keeps the secret - either will lose her someone she loves.

A great follow up to Garner's first novel in the Warrior of the Rift series. We learn more about the rift and the warriors that have are on Earth.  Tori is a strong female character who is matched with a man who is an alpha but also soft and caring. I have rooted for Dante since the first book and am glad he did not pair up with Nix as Tori is the tough girl with a soft center and that is what he needs (especially after caring for his sister as he does).  I was also glad to see Tobias and Nix!

The Line Between Here and Bored - Book Review

dear readers,

THE LINE BETWEEN HERE AND GONE
(Forensic Instincts: Book Two)
Written by Andrea Kane
genre: mystery, suspense,

3.5 STARS

Amanda Gleason's infant son, Justin has a rare immune deficiency that only one person seems to have a cure for...his late father. Paul was murdered before Amanda even had a chance to tell him she was pregnant. Just when time seems to running out a friend sends her a photo that shows a man who looks a lot like Paul. Amanda wonders if Paul may be alive. If he is he could save his son's life. A desperate mother falls at the mercy of Forensic Instinct - A behaviorist. A former navy SEAL. A techno-wizard. An intuitive. A retired FBI agent. A human-scent-evidence dog - to not only do the impossible but in the shortest amount of time.

The Good: I was absorbed into this novel from the beginning as Kane makes you feel invested not only in saving Justin's life but figuring out why/how Paul vanished IF he wasn't really murdered. Each of the characters has a niche and also interact with one another differently which makes you interested in the investigators as well as the investigation.
The Bad: Some parts were dragged out a bit so that when the reveals come you already are ahead of them.

Overall I would recommend the read but not a Kane favourite.

READ the 1st book in the series when FORENSIC INSTINCTS takes on their first case...

The Girl Who Disappeared Twice
(Forensic Instincts: Book Two)
Written by Andrea Kane
genre: mystery, suspense

3.5 Stars

"If she'd only turned her head, she would have seen the car containing her daughter, struggling to escape her kidnapper. Despite years determining the fates of families, family court judge Hope Willis couldn't save her own. Now she's grasping at any hope for Krissy's rescue. She calls Casey Woods and her team of investigators, Forensic Instincts. A behaviorist. A techno-wizard. An intuitive. A former Navy SEAL. Unconventional operatives. All with unique talents and reasons for joining Casey's group. Able to accurately read people after the briefest encounter, Casey picks up signs of a nervous spouse, a guilty conscience, a nanny that hides on her cell. She watches as secrets creep into the open. But time is running out, and the authorities are bound by the legal system. Not Casey's team. For they know that the difference between Krissy coming back alive and disappearing forever could be as small as a suspect's rapid breathing, or as deep as Hope's dark family history." (From Amazon)
I really enjoyed the first novel in the Forensic Instinct series.  While I figured out who kidnapped Krissy it was still an exciting read especially to figure out who kidnapped Felicity.  It is a fast paced read that leaves you a bit breathless until the end.  Casey Woods is a great heroine that is what you expect in an investigator from the 1940s!

Daisy Ellis, middle sister, was the only one not to have married for love. Foisted on Craigmore by her father Daisy endured a marriage of hell until she become a widow. Happy to be free from Craigmore she discovers he did not leave her any money so finds herself making perfume for profit.  All is starting to look up until there are murders that seem to be connected to Daisy's new scent.

Ian Ranulf has been used to keeping to the shadows and trying to stay away from London society.  He thought all that possible including passion has now been ignited by a pretty blonde who is not his usual type.  As he sets forth to protect her and help uncover the murderer he finds himself more than intrigued with the young widow.

I have been waiting for this novel since I read FIRELIGHT and it did not disappoint.  I was intrigued with the young girl married to an old cruel man but still seemed to shine.  The chemistry between her and Ian is crackling yet subtle.  This novel has it all - mystery, murder, romance, history and the paranormal.  This is a new series to watch!
