REVIEWS: Emily and Charlotte Bronte

dear readers,

Recently I have been listening to classic novels written by the Bronte sisters...

WUTHERING HEIGHTS
Written by Emily Bronte
 (Audio)
genre: classics, gothic

1.5 STARS

I was a bit bored with this novel.  I was not enthralled with the love story.  I can almost hear the Eminem and Rhianna song playing in the background...Love the way you lie.  Sorry Emily, I would rather read Rebecca DuMaurier's Rebecca!

JANE EYRE
Written by Charlotte Bronte
(Audio)
genre: classics, gothic

3 STARS

In some ways this novel reminded me of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca but not as good.  We get to see Jane's path to Thornfield but at times I was a bit bored with her observations and did not understand her love for Edward Rochester.  A good gothic read.

All right Anne, let's see what you got!

love,
kris

REVIEW: The Spire - Richard North Patterson

THE SPIRE
Written by Richard North Patterson
(Read by Holter Graham)
genre: mystery, suspense

4 STARS

Lawyer Mark Darrow is asked by his mentor to return to Caldwell College to be the new President as the current one is suspected of embezzling from their funds.  With mixed feelings he returns to Wayne where the past has not moved on.  Darrow a high school football star was scouted by Farr (Professor at Caldwell) to play ball with a full scholarship.  He agrees if his good friend Steve Tillman is also scouted.

One night after a college party a black college student is found by Mark and the last person to be see with her is was his friend, Steve. A fellow student - who is a mean drunk - states he saw Tillman out during the time of death.  Tillman is sent to prison for life. Race relations in Wayne has gone from bad to worse.

Mark has never been able to let go of his doubt over Steve's conviction.  Once he arrives at Caldwell he continues his visit to Steve.  As he asks questions about the former President's embezzling he finds himself wondering about Tillman's case.  Also from his past is Taylor Farr - the daughter of his mentor - who is now all grown up and Darrow finds himself drawn to her.

I listened to this novel on audio and it was enjoyable!  The reader is Holter Graham (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0334077/) and he is not bad (his girl voices are a bit too breathy).  Even though I figured out who the killer was way too early I was still enthralled with the story and how it unravels.  I liked Darrow and seeing the case through his eyes.

kris

REVIEW: STILL ALICE - Lisa Genova

dear readers,

I picked up this audio on a whim...

STILL ALICE
Written by Lisa Genova
(Audio - Read By Author)
genre: literary fiction
3 STARS

Alice, a Harvard professor of Psychology, finds herself starting to forget the little things like words which is difficult as her specialty is Language and Linguistics.  One day she forgets to board the plane to go on her trip and finds herself getting lost on her jogs to places she has been every day for decades.

When she is diagnosed with early onset of Alzheimer's her husband, John also a professor at Harvard (Biology) refuses to believe it.  Her grown children are thrown for a loop when they realize they too might have the gene that causes early onset Alzheimer and whether they want to be tested and what this means for the future generation.  We get to follow Alice for a little over 2 years as she tries to cope with her disease and new life.
I heard this on audio and I think it was a bit of a mistake.  This audio was read by the author and unfortunately she is a horrible reader.  Her voice was monotone and sounded like a surly teenager who was made to read outloud.

As a writer Genova is not half bad.  I found the novel engaging and realistic.  I really liked Alice and how her relationship with her youngest daughter changed drastically due to her Alzheimer's. To see how Alice's Alxheimer's progresses was quite fascinating and heartbreaking.  My own grandmother has dementia and we missed many of the early signs because she is in her 80s and we just blamed old age. This novel really makes you wonder what you would do in this situation or if this happened to a loved one.

I would recommend this to all readers as this gives you a bit of insight and compassion of this mental illness.
I would recommend the novel BUT not the audio.

REVIEW: The Lake of Dreams - Kim Edwards

THE LAKE OF DREAMS
Written Kim Edwards
ON AUDIO – read by Anne Marie Lee
genre: literary fiction

2.5 STARS

Currently unemployed, Lucy Jarrett returns home to Lake of Dreams to see her mother who has injured her arm.  She leaves behind her boyfriend Yoshi in Japan. While at home she revisits her past and her family's.  She suffers guilt over her father's death 10 years ago when she did not go fishing with him; her regret over the high school boyfriend she left behind and stopped talking to when her father died; her uncle and cousin that are greedy and maybe leaving her brother in a dead-end position vs. his fair share; and feeling lost in her own life.  She discovers pamphlets stored away from the early 1900s and a connection to the glass windows in the church.  This starts a mystery into her family history and who this woman was that hid these pamphlets.  This starts to give her a purpose that seems to upset everyone in her life

I consider The Memory Keeper's Daughter one of my favourite novels.  It had me from the beginning to end and I have recommended it to many people.  I was looking forward to Edwards’ next novel and saw this audio was available.  It is read by Ann Marie Lee - an actress.  I was a bit disappointed with both to be honest. Edwards writing was too descriptive and actually repeated her own sentences a few times.  I tended to drift away and am sure I missed some things.  I liked the story of Rose and Iris more than present day stuff (and found Lucy a bit annoying because of overconfidence in herself).  I think this novel needed a bit more editing and tightening

Anne Marie has this breathy voice that sounds like she is either try to whisper or seduce someone...and when she read the letters I was not sure when they ended unless there was a clear "sincerely, name".  Maybe Anne Marie was bored with Edwards’ descriptions as she had a monotone voice through them.

Hi, I'm Kris and I am a book addict...

dear readers,

Do you find yourself buying more books then you read?

Do you have more one TBR (To Be Read) list going at a time?

Are you avoiding or canceling plans  to finish your book?

Are you currently reading more than one book...oh, and another on audio and another on your eReader?

Other than your wallet - is the first thing you grab on your way out a book(s)?

Are you now storing books under your bed because your shelf has no more nooks to cram more books in?

If you answered yes to any of these questions...you are a book addict!

Do not fret I am here to help.  Well, sort of.  I am starting this blog as a forum to meet other book addicts and discuss the wonderful world of the written word.  I will be posting my reviews of books I read - take them as you will.  The only people that can understand this affliction are other book addicts.

So come join in the mayhem...

kris
