REVIEWS: Emily and Charlotte Bronte

dear readers,

Recently I have been listening to classic novels written by the Bronte sisters...

WUTHERING HEIGHTS
Written by Emily Bronte
 (Audio)
genre: classics, gothic

1.5 STARS

I was a bit bored with this novel.  I was not enthralled with the love story.  I can almost hear the Eminem and Rhianna song playing in the background...Love the way you lie.  Sorry Emily, I would rather read Rebecca DuMaurier's Rebecca!

JANE EYRE
Written by Charlotte Bronte
(Audio)
genre: classics, gothic

3 STARS

In some ways this novel reminded me of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca but not as good.  We get to see Jane's path to Thornfield but at times I was a bit bored with her observations and did not understand her love for Edward Rochester.  A good gothic read.

All right Anne, let's see what you got!

kris

REVIEW: The Dead Travel Fast

dear readers,

THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST
Standalone
written by Deanna Raybourn
genre: paranormal, romance, gothic, history

2.5 STARS

I really liked Raybourn's Silent in the Grave and was looking forward to this stand alone novel and was sorely disappointed.   Set in Victorian times Theodora's grandfather has died leaving her with debts and in the hands of her brother-in-law. Her writing does not bring in enough money so they wonder what to do with Theodora. She then  receives a letter from a boarding school chum who invites her to her upcoming wedding. Arriving in Transylvania she discovers the myths she heard as a child seem to be coming true.  And the count may be more than a mortal.

This Gothic novel falls flat as the characters are not likeable, the heroine is annoying and wishy washy, the supernatural aspects are weak (cannot give examples without giving away the little suspense there is) and it ends quickly but rambles on with unimportant parts that have nothing to do with the novel.
