NEW FAVOURITE AUTHOR: Teresa Medeiros (Reviews)

dear readers,

What's better than find a debut author to follow...an author that has been around for a few decades and has a booklist you can dive into.  So far this year I would nominate TERESA MEDEIROS as a new favourite author.  She is a historical romance writer and my first novel of her's was in the Kane/Cabot Vampire series, AFTER MIDNIGHT and I have not looked back.

AFTER MIDNIGHT
(Kane/Cabot Vampire: Book One)
genre: historical romance, paranormal, romance

4 STARS

It is left to Caroline Cabot, eldest of three sisters to make sure they are taken care of and find influential matches.  Portia, the youngest is convinced that Vivienne's suitor Adrian Kane is a Vampire along with most of London ton.  He is rarely seen outside before dark, and most dinner parties take place after midnight.  Caroline tries to figure out the secret of Adrian but soon finds herself falling for her sister's husband-to-be. While Portia moons over Julian Kane and his rakish charm, and Vivienne spurns Larkin every time they meet.  Will the Cabot sisters be able to handle the Kane brothers’ secrets?

I really really liked this novel! I imagine it is what Jane Austen and Mary Shelly would have written if they co-authored a novel.  It is witty, sexy, otherworldly  and FUN!  The only difficulty with this novel is which brother do I like best? The brooding older brother or the charming younger brother.

THE VAMPIRE WHO LOVED ME
(Kane/Cabot Vampire: Book Two)
genre: historical romance, paranormal, romance

4.5 STARS

It has been 5 years since After Midnight and Portia is all grown up and still in love with Julian.  Julian has left home looking for his soul so he can be the man Portia deserves.  When Julian returns to London women are being murdered...bled...and Adrian, his brother, and Larkin think it might be Julian but Portia believes otherwise. Portia will go to the ends of hell to get Julian's soul and Julian must stop her before she is killed.

Love love loved this novel and series.  I love the mixture of historical romance and paranormal.  It is a witty
and passionate story that has you in love with the Kane brothers and cheering on the Cabot sisters. It is a great read for anyone.

YOURS UNTIL DAWN
genre: historical romance

4 STARS

During a battle, Gabriel Fairchild was wounded and lost his sight but it seems he lost more than his vision.  His fiance has left him, and his parents have banished him to Fairchild Park Manor.  He has become surly and lost the will to care about his future.  Enter  Samantha Wickersham who has answered the butler's ad to be Gabriel's nurse.  Despite his antics and grizzly mood Samantha sticks to Gabriel and is determined to have him function as normally as he can.

This story is very much like Beauty and Beast with the Fairchild servants like the Beast's servants (from Disney version).  I loved this novel and read from cover to cover on a rainy night.  What sets this novel apart is that Gabriel and Samantha are so great together - the banter and the passion.  I loved the servants who added a lot to this story.

A KISS TO REMEMBER
(Fairleigh Sisters: Book 1)
genre: historical romance

 3 STARS

Sterling was sold to a paternal uncle in exchange for his parents keeping their home and him being the Duke's heir.  This has left Sterling cutting off ties with his parents and living life a little carelessly.  If Laura Fairleigh -like a mother to her orphaned young siblings- wants to keep her family sheltered she must marry by her 21st birthday - which is in a few weeks. The cottage will be deeded to Laura by Sterling's late mother that is unless Sterling can put a stop to it.

On his way to Arden cottage Sterling has an accident and loses his memory...Laura finding him does not know who he is and decides to have him marry her so she can keep the cottage.  Will anyone come looking for the often vanishing Duke and can George and Lottie (Laura's siblings) talk her out of the marriage?

It is loosely based on Sleeping Beauty and I have to say I like it way better the traditional telling of the tale.  I was not completely won over by Sterling and Laura but yet they worked together and the secondary story with Sterling's cousin, Diana and Thane was also amusing.  A good read.

While I wait for  One Night of Scandal I picked up another stand alone Shadows and Lace...reviews will be posted in the near future.

Review: Kiss of the Vampire

dear readers,

Have you walked by the Paranormal Romance section and wondered what the fuss was all about?  Yeah, yeah hot pale vampires, buff hairy werewolves...sorry what was I saying? Ah, yes paranormal romance.  To be honest I am a novice in this genre.  I have read teen paranormal romance but not too many of the adult novels.  I do love Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/books/) which are more like romantic suspense set in a supernatural world.  I also read Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, books that True Blood is based on (http://www.charlaineharris.com/)  I tried Laurel K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series which made me blush for a week and to this day I can't remember the plot.

Due to Shelfari and the friends I have made on there I am trying books I have never thought of or really wanted to read.  PNR has been something I have been interested so getting PNR reader's opinions has given me a start to my PNR novels to read.  I felt a little adventuress and so blindly chose an advanced copy of a new author with a new PNR series. (I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review). After making sure it was the first book I downloaded it to my Kobo.

KISS OF THE VAMPIRE
(Warriors of the Rift: Book 1)
written by Cynthia Garner
genre: paranormal romance, suspense

4 STARS

Supernaturals were able to cross into the human world when the rift between both worlds is open.  Some demons, shapeshifters and Vampires choose to cause havoc and others try to help it.
Nix de la Fuente is half-human, half-demon she is not part of either world and tries to play to her humanity by helping solve crimes on behalf the Council.  She aids the police (human) and in this case Det. Dante MacMillan and Vampire Special Agent Knox.  In her next case she discovers that not only has a former friend been murdered but her past true love, Tobias Caine is replacing Knox on this case.  Caine left her 5 years ago without much explanation and being near him brings out the demon within her.  If she turns fully demon she could go mad.
OMG, I really like this book and cannot wait for this series (Warriors of the Rift) to continue.  The best way to describe this novel is - paranormal romantic suspense. Garner seamlessly combines paranormal romance and romantic suspense that has you on the edge of your seat and at the same time introduces you to a new world. If you have never read a PNR novel...start with this book.

How TWILIGHT Should Have Been Written: Review

dear readers,

Ever feel like the teen angst and whining in the Twilight was going make you crawl the walls?  Not that it is a bad series it just felt simplistic, unedited and a lacked passion.  The kind of love that when you shut the book it makes you swoon a bit.  I have the solution of you...

THE DISCOVERY OF WITCHES
(All Souls Trilogy: Book 1)
written by Deborah Harkness
genre: fantasy, paranormal, romance, historical, literature

4 STARS

An epic forbidden relationship between a powerful Witch and ancient Vampire. It had Daemons, Witches and Vampires picking sides - for or against mixing of supernaturals. Enemies from all sides...threatening notes, kidnapping, stalking and murders. That is just the first part of the long yet quick novel.
It is a well written story that takes you away to another world and holds you a voluntary prisoner till the end! There is no flat love triangle or disturbing relationships. The characters are lively and jump from the pages.  And, the love...there is longing where he tries to keep her away from his dark side, but the push and pull has passion behind it.
Matthew should be added to the list of tasty vampire men - handsome, worldly and of course brooding.   Diana, the hesitant witch, is his love and a strong heroine.  Did I mention this is only book one in the series?

*The Discovery of Witches was published February 2011.

I am currently reading FALLEN (Book 1) by Lauren Kate another teen paranormal novel.  I am only halfway in the book and still in suspense.  This might be another good teen novel - will keep you posted.
